LOCAL PARK NORD IN THE EXPO DISTRICT OF KRONSBERG, HANOVER

Immediately adjacent to the Expo site is the new residential area of Kronsberg. Two Local Parks – Nord and Mitte – were sited in sections of the urban grid reserved for open space.

The local park Nord is open on all sides. It is paved in bands of slabs along the hillside, at the centre rises an earth lentil planted with pine trees and grasses. Grasses and herbaceous perennials grow in the paving joints. Short sections of the paving bands break up to pile into seating blocks.

These traces expose segments of the Kronsberg karst formation. The earth lentil rises up to 1.5 m above the paving level. The density of the pine grove is reduced towards the centre – the inner area is to grow into a cleared hall. The steel pergola at the top of the hill creates distance to the adjacent open spaces of the residential buildings; the foot of the hill is acoustically accentuated. Rainwater is collected here, dripping into a resonance box - a time-delayed echo of rainfall.
